Sho Dozono For Portland Mayor | Sho Gets It... Sho Gets It Done.
“Sho” for the Arts!

With Portland behind the national per capita average in public funding for the arts. Recognizing that resources are limited, it is a high priority that we establish consistent long-term funding that will be present even in an economic slowdown. The arts play a vital part in the quality of life within our community and to reach and exceed the national per capita average it will take a combination of city financing and private sector resources.

As a civic and business I have shown commitment to the arts in many forms over the years. As trustee of the Portland Art Museum and board member of the Japanese Garden Society I have been instrumental in raising millions of dollars. I also sit on the Board of Governors for the Museum at Warm Springs and have sponsored a variety of theatrical and culturally enriched programs along with being a repeat sponsor of the Portland Jazz Festival. My desire to remain an active supporter of the arts will follow me into the mayor’s office. My experiences in funding the arts will open new doors and present new opportunities.

In August of 2005, Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans and left hundreds of musicians without the ability to earn a living. With New Orleans effectively closed for business, I led the effort to organize a program that would bring out-of-work musicians to Portland. NOLA2PDX provided them and their families with relocation expenses, housing and performance venues. Through a collaboration of active business leaders and supporters of the arts, we were able to raise necessary funding.   World-class jazz came to Portland and our community is richer for it. This is but one example of how the private sector can be a successful partner as we reach our goals.
