Dozono Statement on the Joint Terrorism Task Force
|
PORTLAND, Or.-Mayoral candidate Sho Dozono issued the following statement regarding his position on whether or not the City should participate in the Joint Terrorism Task Force.
"The Mayor needs to look at all ways of protecting the City, however, I would never compromise people's civil liberties. More than 110,000 Japanese Americans, including my grandfather and extended family, were rounded up by the government and interned during World War II. Portland must never let that situation or the Brandon Mayfield case ever happen again," Dozono said.
"The City began its participation in the JTTF when Sam Adams was Mayor Katz’s Chief of Staff, and at that time he was an active supporter of the JTTF. In a Portland Mercury interview with both candidates, Sho stated 'I would have dealt with the Joint Terrorism Task force differently.' If he had been allowed to clarify, Sho would have said that Portland’s position needed to be explained better: 1) to those who were afraid we might make ourselves vulnerable to terrorist attacks, and 2) to those who thought our civil liberties were being compromised," Campaign Manager Amie Abbott said.
"Two of a mayor’s most important duties are providing public safety and protecting our civil liberties, and I take that responsibility very seriously. We therefore need to make sure that the Police Chief continues to report to the Mayor. I would not outsource that responsibility to other members of the Council," Dozono said.
"Sam Adams deliberately misrepresented Sho's words and he knows it. That kind of deceptive politics is why City Hall is in gridlock...and why voters want to change the way things are done at City Hall," Abbott said. |
